Background:
The original school was built in the centre of the village in 1849, and it recently celebrated its 150th birthday. The present school dates from 1981 and is situated in the centre of Horbury in 'delightful' grounds, which have been 'extensively' developed to include a 'large' wild area, a bog area, ponds, various gardens and trails and a study centre. Children showing aptitude can learn a string, woodwind or brass instrument, and all children participate in at least two concerts or productions while at the school. There is a school choir and some members have also joined the Wakefield Junior Youth Choir. Older pupils take swimming lessons and the school holds its own annual swimming gala. Year 6 children take part in abseiling, caving and orienteering on a residential visit. A bookshop is run in the school once a week. The 'flourishing' Parent Teacher Association promotes cultural, social and fundraising activities to benefit pupils.
