Background:
St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary School serves a wide area of Halifax, drawing pupils from several parts of the locality. The school is housed in a Victorian building on two storeys. There are seven classrooms, a hall, music room, parent's room, chapel, library, computer room, dining room and kitchen. There are two playgrounds, and the school uses a playing field nearby. There is a 'strong' musical tradition and through the Education Action Zone, funding is currently involved in an initiative to develop music skills further by developing composition in Years 5 and 6. There are netball and football teams and 'strong' links with Halifax football and rugby clubs, while athletics are currently being developed through Leisure In Action. The school'supports charities 'wherever possible' and has developed 'strong' links with local homes for the elderly. Older pupils in the school visit these homes and prepare concerts for the residents. The school has a 'Christ-centred nature' and aims to encourage each child to reach his or her 'maximum potential' in the environment created.
