Background:

The Sisters of the Cross and Passion founded the school, originally called St Richard's, in the early 19th Century to educate poor children in this inner-city area of Leeds. The present concrete building, with 'attractive cream spalled finish' opened in September 1970. About 20 per cent of pupils are from ethnic minority groups, including those for whom English is a second language and whose parents are travellers. There are 'excellent links' with the parish community, particularly through the performances of the school choir. The school's 'strong Catholic ethos' is reflected in attempts to meet each child's individual needs, within a 'broad, balanced, differentiated' curriculum. Staff believe that children benefit from the practical experiences gained on outside visits, and Year 6 pupils are offered a residential weekend. Sporting achievements include one pupil playing for Leeds City Boys' Football team and another competing for the British Athletics team in Germany. Extra-curricular activities include drama, football, choir, recorder and athletics. In the past, pupils have taken part in the Cooperative Young Film-makers scheme and won a trip to the National Film Theatre in London. Parents are encouraged to attend school masses, liturgies and assemblies and the Friends of St Francis raise money for charity and for a school fund.
