Background:

Founded in 1876 on the southern edge of Leeds, Westerton moved into new semi-open-plan premises in 1988; school buildings extended and remodelled in 2005. The school's spacious and attractive grounds include playgrounds on three sides of the main building, a playing field, and a wildlife area. Over-subscribed, with 1.3 applications per place. Results at the large, urban school have been consistently high and it has been selected as an initial teacher training school. Westerton has a strong tradition of extra-curricular activities, with a particular emphasis on sport and music. The school has two orchestras, each with more than 40 musicians, in addition to a brass band and choir. Every year-group has the opportunity to perform plays or musicals at some point in the school year. Sports are catered for with extra-curricular football, netball, cross-country and swimming. The school nurtures its links with home and the local community through a parent, teacher and friends' association, and through social events to raise funds for the school and support charities.
