Background:

Formed in 1985 by the amalgamation of Heath Grammar School (founded 1597) and Crossley and Porter School (founded 1864); currently housed in Porter School's Victorian building two miles from Halifax town centre. Partly-refurbished in 1990s; new technology block opened in 2002; language college extension in 2004; extension to technology block (2005). Partner in Lawn Tennis Association's Tennis in the Community project; boys' rugby team won Daily Mail Vase at Twickenham in 2005. Selects students based on performance in tests administered by school. Strong academic and sporting tradition. Specialist language college status from September 2003. Over-subscribed, with three applications per place. Artsmark (2005); Sportsmark; Investor in People status. Ethos: 'High aspirations are nurtured and maintained and each persons talents are fully developed'.
