Background:
The Free Grammar School of Prince Henry founded after Thomas Cave, a wealthy merchant from Wakefield, left £250 in his will to establish a school in Otley. The school opened in the vicarage in Otley in 1611, after receiving its royal charter on April 30th 1607 from Henry, Prince of Wales, the son of James 1. The school building in Manor Square was completed in 1614. For almost 400 years Prince Henry's Grammar School has served the young people of its communities. The school is a specialist language college, which started in 1998, and has recently been reconfirmed for a further four years, remains at the forefront of educational progress. Schools curriculum includes the study of Spanish and either French or German to an accredited level. The school has the most technologically advanced learning environment in the area, with access to videoconferencing facilities, satellite television, interactive whiteboards and a multi-media ICT suite/language laboratory. The school aims to develop all aspects of the students' personal, social and academic life so that they are fully prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead of them.
