Background:

Norland is a small school located in the village of Norland, a scattered rural community in the Pennines. Most of its pupils live in the village, on farms or in nearby villages but many people from as far afield as Halifax and Huddersfield increasingly register their children on its waiting list. This 'over-subscribed, popular' school has 'high standards, both academic and social' and is 'very much the heart of the community' with which it has 'strong links'. Every year, a concert and afternoon tea is provided for the senior members of the community. Building on the school hall is due to start in 2002. For a small school, it provides the children with 'many sporting opportunities' and its after-school clubs include football, cricket, rounders, netball and a weekly running club attended by both pupils and parents. The school also provides residential visits for older pupils every year. Its charity work includes Food for Africa events in conjunction with the church. Norland was awarded Beacon status at the beginning of 2001.
