Background:
St Mary's Catholic School was founded nearly 160 years ago in 1846. It was the first Catholic school to be established in Halifax and is one of the oldest schools in the Diocese of Leeds. The original school was established on Gibbet Street and then, due to the increase in pupils during the latter part of the 19th century, was housed in separate infant and junior schools on Bedford Street and Clarence Street. The school occupies a large, spacious building and is set in extensive, pleasant grounds with grass and hard playground areas surrounded by shrubs and a good number of mature trees. It has eleven classrooms, a main hall, dinning hall, prayer room, library, information and communication technology suite and parent's room. The school curriculum covers the following subjects: mathematics, literacy, religious education, science, history, geography, art, physical education, design and technology, information and communication technology and music. The school aims to provide a secure, stimulating and positive environment.
