Background:

Crofton High School serves children of the ages 11 to 16. It is a comprehensive school maintained by Wakefield local education authority situated in the centre of Crofton village, a small rural community just to the south of Wakefield. This comprehensive school serves more than 1,000 students in a rural community six miles south of Wakefield. Completion of a #4.2 million building programme following a fire, which destroyed the main building in 1995, has left pupils 'with the very best of facilities'. Also, despite losing half its student population 'in line with demographic trends' between 1980 and 1992, 'consistent success and increased reputation' has boosted today's enrolment to current levels. Facilities include an 'integrated unit for children with visual impairment' and a 'wide programme of extracurricular activities.' The school cites a philosophy of promoting maximum achievement through 'a caring ethos'. The school has a wide-ranging extra-curricular programme. As well as the traditional winter and summer games for both boys and girls it offers an extensive list of other activities. These include: theatre visits, art gallery expeditions, museum visits, foreign travel and technology innovation competition. The school aims to provide the climate, experiences and opportunities to help them achieve their true potential.
