Background:
The school was established in 1985, when the local infant and junior schools merged. Set in its own grounds, pupils benefit from the 'excellent' playground and grass areas. Although Barwick-in-Elmet 'strives for high academic standards', it also aims to provide a 'varied' curriculum through extra-curricular activities both within and outside of school hours. Forty per cent of the current pupils have taken up the opportunity to learn a woodwind, string or brass instrument. After school clubs include football, netball, cross country running, athletics and music. Children compete in the local football league, in addition to two of the city's cross country meetings. Pupils in Year 6 are able to take part in a week long residential outdoor pursuits trip. The school itself provides an out of school club, which is open from 7.50-8.50am and 3.30-5.30pm. Special educational needs (SEN) provision is tailored to the individual's requirements, with support being provided by both class teachers and teaching assistants.
