Background:

Westwood School was built in 1968 to cater for children on the new Westwood council estate. All pupils either live there or on the nearby Middleton estate and the school is currently over-subscribed. Although these areas are socially and economically disadvantaged, the school manages to achieve 'high standards of behaviour', and academic results which are 'around the Leeds average'. The school offers an 'excellent' range of extra-curricular activities and has been awarded grants and certificates of commendation by local trusts and organisations such as Education Extra. Currently school clubs are held for football, rugby, league tennis, golf, art and creative reading. Clubs have also been run, with the support of qualified coaches, in netball, first aid, athletics and gardening. Westwood rents a local allotment which the Greenfingers Club maintains and selling the produce, all of which is organically grown, makes this a self-financing venture. The school makes 'very good use' of the local area and has undertaken 'excellent' projects in local history and science with the help of the local park ranger. The school has 'strong links' with the local community, which are maintained through educational visits, guest speakers and an 'active' parent teacher association. Westwood has an 'excellent' reputation locally for 'good discipline', sport and a 'we can do it' approach.
