Background:

Founded in 1975, Streethouse Junior occupies a single storey, 'semi-open plan' building on the edge of village. The catchment area is a former mining community and there is 'considerable unemployment'. Although there is some private housing in the area, many pupils come from a nearby large council estate. The school is home to Wakefield local education authority's only mainstream primary school based provision for pupils with physical disabilities. The resource base was opened in January 2000 and is able to admit up to 10 pupils. At present three children are enrolled in the base and they are supported by one full-time teacher and two support assistants. There are also two part-time classroom support assistants at the school who work with teachers in supporting pupils with special educational needs (SEN). A new nursery was also opened in January 2000 and is run as an early years unit, comprising nursery and early reception age children. A breakfast club operates each morning for nursery, reception and Key Stage 1 pupils.
