Background:

Originally founded in 1870, the school opened in a new building on a different site in 1969. It is situated in the centre of the historic market town of Otley and offers a large open site to the rear of the school, on the edge of the River Wharfe. Its range of after-school activities includes French, bell ringing, brass and woodwind band, rounders, netball and other sports, and violin is offered in school hours. The 'very active' parent-teacher association organises a wide variety of events and there are 'very strong' community links, particularly with the parish. After-school care is available at a nearby school. The deputy head acts as the special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) and all children with statements and on the SEN register are fully integrated into all aspects of school life. St Joseph's is a Catholic School, which promotes the teachings and practices of the Catholic Church. It radiates a warm, friendly atmosphere, where pupils feel secure and contented, and which is conducive to learning. It aims to develop the whole child ' spiritually, intellectually, emotionally and physically.
