Background:

Farnley was originally a Dame school, founded by the Fawkes family to provide education for children living on their estate. A school building was constructed in 1898 and this was extensively refurbished and extended in 1968. More recent additions to the accommodation have included a library and a temporary classroom, both of which were facilitated by various fundraising activities. Set in 'lovely parkland', the grounds of the school offer a playground, playing field and 'prize winning' science garden designed by pupils. Also on site is a private nursery facility, which also offers before and after school care for pupils at the school from 8am to 6pm. A large proportion of the school's pupils live outside the catchment area, particularly in the nearby town of Otley. The school is active in the local community, through links with the church, and pupils are also given the opportunity to participate in activities in Otley. The school recently won the local village school kwik cricket championship and five of the six categories iin the North Yorkshire technology competition. The children are also encouraged to take part in fundraising for national and international charities. The small size of the school facilitates the rapid detection of any special educational needs (SEN). A SEN co-ordinator and two non-teaching assistants provide learning support and monitor progress in lessons.
