Background:

Sutton-in-Craven Community Primary was founded in October 1896 and is still accommodated in its original Victorian buildings. In addition to seven classrooms it offers a library/television room, and is surrounded by a large playground. Governors, parents and teachers have joined together to create a garden area, which 'not only enhances the school, but is also an area where pupils can grow plants and study wildlife'. Next door to the school is the village park, which the school uses whenever possible, and the large expanse of grass is used for sports throughout the year. During summer lunch breaks, older children are allowed to use the pitch and putt, tennis and bowls facitlities, under supervision. The school aims to provide a planned curriculum incorporating 'a wide range of opportunities for all pupils to extend their personal experience and their social, moral, spiritual and cultural understanding'. It presents the curriculum along the lines laid out in the national curriculum, and RE is compulsory for all pupils. The school is proud of its strong tradition in mathematics, English and science and has strengths in music and physical education. The school also has a running club as well as teams for football, netball and cross-country. Other extra-curricular activities include a choir that takes part in local, regional and national competitions. The school has good links with the local community and encourages pupils to raise funds for charities.
