Background:
The school was founded in 1871, although it moved to its present site in 1896. A new extension was opened in 2002 comprising six classrooms and a sports hall. There are excellent outdoor facilities including a large playground and separate reception playground, a pond and wildlife area, an evolving sensory garden and a large sports field. Staff 'aim to create a family atmosphere' and have 'high expectations' of pupils. There is an emphasis on basic skills and standards are high. Children are encouraged to take responsibility and give service to others through work on the school council, jobs in school, charity work and performing at local hospitals and residential homes. Communication is a key element to success. The school works closely with parents and the local community and fortnightly newsletters keep everyone informed. The governing body is supportive and highly effective. 'The school has an excellent ethos for learning and there is an outstanding unity of purpose throughout the school'.
