Background:
Founded in 1833 by the Howard family, the school was refurbished in 1996 when it became a junior and infant school. It is therefore a 'mix of old and new' and facilities include a playing field, environmental area and pond, two playgrounds, six classrooms, kitchen, music room and computer suite. Ackworth is a small village of mixed housing. The school is 'very strong' in the foundation subjects, in addition to art and music. A wide variety of after-school activities and sports are offered. At present, the school is a holder of a Quality Mark and Investors in People award. Pupils benefit from the 'strong international dimension', including links with a school in a South African township and a leading role in the Wakefield book appeal, which gathered 60,000 books for schools in Ivory Park near Johannesburg. There are seven education support assistants and good facilities and resources for pupils with special educational needs (SEN). Links have been developed with a local special school and Ackworth Howard is 'gaining a reputation' for its work with SEN pupils.
