Background:
A village school with a 'calm' working atmosphere, Askwith sets 'high standards in all aspects of school life'. The main school was built in 'picturesque' countryside in 1908 and received extensions in 1996 and 1998 to cope with growing pupil numbers. A 'millennium garden' has also been created. In 1997 the school was named in Ofsted's Annual Report as one of the top 72 primary schools. The school notes small class sizes as one of its strengths, and the early identification of children with Special Educational Needs (SEN). The 'wide range' of extra-curricular activities held at lunchtimes and after school are an 'essential' part of school life. Children learn the recorder and can have additional tuition in a musical instrument. Sports teams made up of pupils take part 'very successfully' in local competitions. Pupils have received special awards in national writing and poetry competitions. Older children take part in an annual activities week and can go on a residential visit to the Northumberland coast. Pupils have recently created a school website and are maintaining links with a school in Milan, Italy.
