Background:
Opened in 1976, the school is housed in a single storey, semi-open plan brick building. Pupils come from a 'very mixed' catchment area, and a 'large percentage' apply for admission from outside the area. The school is oversubscribed, with 42 applicants for 32 places. Facilities include seven classroom units and three activity areas, a hall, hard play areas and grass areas to the north of the building. Extra-curricular activities available include athletics, science club, netball, drama, line dancing, recorders, brass tuition, football club, guitar, singing for fun and computers. Children are 'actively encouraged' in out-of-school sports and have the opportunity to work towards the English Schools Athletic Association's bronze, silver and gold award schemes. Towngate aims to 'provide a broad and balanced education which develops each child and enables them to achieve their full potential'.
