Background:

Opened in 1989 following closure of Holy Name Catholic Middle School; situated opposite the church and primarily serves the parish of Holy Name in Cookridge; about 92 per cent of pupils are Catholic. 'The community and curricular life of the school benefits greatly from the non-Catholic pupils and families it also serves.' Facilities include dedicated library, ICT suite to be refurbished and extended, stage, and large playing field. The full national curriculum is taught and children learn swimming in Year 4. Extra-curricular activities include football, art and craft, readings, netball, recorder, drama and guitar. Recent sporting success; participants in national rounders tournament in 2003 and 2004 after winning Leeds tournament. Pupils who wish to learn a woodwind instrument or violin can do so in school time at a charge. Children often go on trips to places of interest and the highlight for Year 6 children is the opportunity to spend a week in Keswick in the Lake District. Children also engage in a variety of fundraising activities for charity. The school works closely with the familes of pupils and with parishioners to ensure children achieve their full potential, and has active parent-teacher association. 'Our hope is that children leaving the school will be able to contribute to society in a positive, active manner, and within a Christian context.' Over-subscribed, with 1.3 applications per place.
