Background:

Opened in 1963, Bruntcliffe High School is situated on a 'pleasant 40-acre site' with 'extensive' playing fields which back on to Dartmouth Park in Morley. This over-subscribed school receives two applications for every Year 7 place and appears in the DfEE's list of the top 200 schools that have 'most improved'. The school's 'acclaimed' Show Group performs regularly in the school, at festivals in Leeds and in Morley's twin town, Siegen, in Germany. The school is also linked through its Modern Languages department with Grenade sur l'Adour in France, and exchanges research findings on the topic of pollution with schools in Germany and Sweden through the EU-funded Comenius project. Other activities include an annual poetry festival, while a number of pupils won awards in the last UK Junior Mathematical Challenge. The school's sporting achievements include City champions in football and Rugby League (1998/99) and it has produced three national Olympic weightlifting champions. The school believes that 'all young people have an entitlement to develop fully their full potential as individuals and as citizens of a wider society' and aims to 'help pupils to become fully developed, caring people capable of working in every way to the best of their abilities'.
