Background:
Overthorpe Primary occupies a large site close to the top of the hillside on which the community of Thornhill is situated. There is 'substantial unemployment' in the locality, and the school serves a 'mixed' community. The school building is approximately 40 years old with outside facilities described as 'bleak', a situation which the school is trying to rectify. The school aims to 'promote a positive attitude towards all forms of sport' and children are coached by representatives from Bullford Bulls and Thornhill RLFC. A number of extra-curricular activities are available, and these have included gymnastics, choir, recorder groups and concert groups. Overthorpe has 'strong links' with the church and community, there is a 'thriving' Parents Support Group, and pupils support a child in Africa. 'We intend to be a happy, caring and safe school in which every child has the opportunity to develop their full potential and become good citizens'.
