Background:
Opened in 1969, the school serves pupils from a very wide area, including many of the old mining villages to the east of Leeds and the eastern edge of Leeds itself. The school's single-storey building was reorganised in 1999 to create a new computer room and to develop plans for the addition of a nursery unit. The 'extensive' grounds include two hard-play areas and a football pitch. The curriculum is taught within a 'caring Christian environment' and there are 'many' educational visits including a residential visit for Year 6 pupils. A 'good reputation' for assemblies and concerts has been established in the community and other local links are 'very strong'. The school recently won a competition promoted by St Ivel Foods to find the 'most vital school in England'. Extra-curricular activities include team sports, chess, art, choir and instrumental tuition. 'Much emphasis' is placed on fundraising for different charities and pupils can learn to save through a school bank managed by older pupils. 'Any offer of help' from parents is welcome.
